The Battle of Normandy- known as D-day
The battle of Normandy began June 6, 1944 in Normandy, France. Under the command of General Montgomery, American, British, Canadian, and French forces landed at different points along the coastline of Normandy. The area was guarded by the Germans as part of their Atlantic Wall defenses The Germans also flooded some of the area behind the coastline as a precaution against parachute assault.
The Allies carefully mapped the landing area. They arrived by parachute and gliders. The Germans were not expecting landings like that because of the weather conditions in the English channel. The French helped to disrupt the Axis lines of communications drawing the Germans away from where the Allies were landing. They gave the Allies a big advantage in the war.

There were 2 airfields on the island and they were under Japan's control. If The Japanese continued to control it, they could use the airfields to attack American bombers with fighter planes during their flights to Japan. But, if America gained control of the island, then the airfields could be used as emergency landing bases for damaged airplanes during the bombings. The Americans could also use the airfields to use the smaller runways that were needed for the bomber planes to take-off The Japanese knew that keeping control of the island was important. On February 19, 1945, America started the battle to take control of Iwo Jima. It took America over a month, but they won. There were 6, 891 American men casualties killed and 18,070 wounded. Out of 22,000 Japanese soldiers on the island, only 212 were taken prisoner. The rest were killed.
